A Simple Automation Campaign

An Automation Campaign is a group of event types that are executed over time based on a subscribers actions.

The following is a step-by-step process for creating and deploying a simple Automation Campaign. In this example, you will need to create:

  • Two Lists, one with subscribers
  • One List Definition
  • One Template
  • One Marketing Automation Campaign

The flow of the Automation Campaign will be:

  • Deploy Email to a List
  • Check for Subscriber Opens
  • If Open, then Subscribe to a second list.
  • If No Open, then Optout from first list.

Marketing Automation is a very robust feature, and many aspects are skimmed over to allow you a basic understanding.

Step 1: Setup Lists

Lists are collections of one or more subscribers (via subscription to the List) and control the properties necessary to send an Email campaign. These properties include the From and Reply To address, as well as more advanced settings, such as tracking and workflow requirements.

List Definitions are similar in that they control the properties necessary to send an Automation Campaign. However, subscribers are not 'subscribed' to a List Definition with a subscription. Instead, an Automation Campaign uses the properties from the List Definition to send a new message to a batch of Subscribers.

Before you can define an Automation Campaign and Deploy, you must first:

  1. Create a List for your subscribers.
    1. Go to LISTS > VIEW LISTS and click Add List. This will display the Add List page.
    2. Enter the List Name. List Type will default to Normal.
    3. Click SAVE to save the List.
    4. When you create the List, the Edit List page will display where you can define your List Properties. This is the list of Subscribers that will be used in the Automation Campaign.
  2. Import subscribers into your list.
  3. Create a list for new subscribers following the same steps as above.
  4. Create a List Definition for the Automation Campaign.
    1. Go to LISTS > LIST DEFINITIONS and click Add List Definition. This will display the Add List Definition page.
    2. Enter the List Definition Name.
    3. Click SAVE to save the List Definition.
    4. When you create the List Definition, the Edit List page will display where you can define your List Definition properties. These are the properties that will be used in the Automation Campaign. See List Properties for details on defining the properties.

Step 2: Define Content

In order to send an email message to subscribers from an Automation Campaign, you must define your content. To do this, go to CONTENT > VIEW TEMPLATES. Click Add Template. For more information about adding content, see Create Template and add content.

Deploying an email is not required of an Automation Campaign, but a template will be used in this example.

Step 3: Setup Marketing Automation Campaign

The Automation Campaign defines the workflow of events to run in response to subscriber actions. Before you can define the Automation Campaign flow, you must create the reporting labels. These will be used in future Automation Reporting features. While there are several default reporting labels predefined, create one of each type for this simple test.

  1. Create Reporting Labels - Phase
    1. Go to MARKETING AUTOMATION > MANAGE AUTOMATION > VIEW PHASES.
    2. Click Add Phase. The Add/Edit Phase page will display.
    3. Enter a short Phase Name and a Description.
    4. Click Save.
  2. Create Reporting Labels - Campaign Type
    1. Go to MARKETING AUTOMATION > MANAGE AUTOMATION > VIEW CAMPAIGN TYPES.
    2. Click Add Campaign Type. The Add/Edit Campaign Type page will display.
    3. Enter a short Campaign Type and a Description.
    4. Click Save.
  3. Create Reporting Labels - Category
    1. Go to MARKETING AUTOMATION > MANAGE AUTOMATION > VIEW CATEGORIES.
    2. Click Add Category. The Add/Edit Category page will display.
    3. Enter a short Category Name and a Description.
    4. Click Save.
  4. Create an Automation Campaign
    1. Go to MARKETING AUTOMATION > AUTOMATION CAMPAIGNS to open the Automation Campaign Library.
    2. Click Add Campaign. The Create Automation Campaign popup will display.
    3. Enter a Title, Name, and Description. The Title is used in the user interface to allow you to easily recognize the Automation Campaign. The Name is used in the API commands. Title and Name do not allow special characters other than dash (-) and underscore (_). Title also accepts a space.
    4. Select a Phase, Campaign Type, and Category.
    5. Click Save. The popup will close and the new Automation Campaign will appear as Inactive in the Marketing Automation Campaign Library.

Step 4: Define the Marketing Automation Campaign

Once the Automation Campaign has been created, you can build the action flow using the Marketing Automation Builder.

  1. From the Marketing Automation Campaign Library, click the Title of the Automation Campaign to open it for editing in the Marketing Automation Builder.
 
  1. From the Campaign Builder action list on the left, drag Deploy Email to the workspace.
    1. Click the action to open the Deploy Email popup.
    2. Select your Template, the List Definition, and enter a Subject Line. This will override the Subject Line defined in your Template.
    3. Click Save.

 
  1. From the Campaign Builder action list on the left, drag Open to the workspace.
    1. Click the action to open the Opened Email popup.
    2. Select to Proceed at the end of Duration the Wait Duration of 3 Days.
    3. Click Save. This will move the Subscribers along the flow at the end of the three day wait period.
    4. Connect the bottom of the Deploy Email to the top of the Opened action.

 
  1. Drag Edit Subscription to the workspace.
    1. Click the action to open the Edit Subscription popup.
    2. Select Add to List and Apply to the second list created.
    3. Click Save. All subscribers that open the email will be subscribed to this second list.
    4. Connect the Opened Yes to the top of the Edit Subscription.

 
  1. Drag a second Edit Subscription to the workspace.
    1. Click the action to open the Edit Subscription popup.
    2. Select Opt Out and Apply to the first list created.
    3. Click Save. All subscribers that do not open the email will be opted out of the original list.
    4. Connect the Opened No to the top of the Edit Subscription.

 
  1. Drag END to the workspace and connect to the first Edit Subscription.
  2. Drag a second END to the workspace and connect to the second Edit Subscription.

    The Action flow should appear similiar to the image on the right.

  1. Click Save, then select Save & Continue or Save & Close to save the Automation Campaign.

Step 5: Deploy the Marketing Automation Campaign

The final step is to use the Deploy Campaign wizard to initiate the Automation Campaign.

  1. From the Marketing Automation Campaign Library, click the INACTIVE button next to the Automation Campaign to make it Active.
  2. Go to TASKS > DEPLOY CAMPAIGN to open the Deploy Campaign wizard.
  3. Set the Mailing Type to Automation.
  4. Select the Automation Campaign created above.
  5. Select the List with subscribers to send.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Verify the settings, then click Send.

Once the campaign is deployed, the subscribers will receive the email message, and then the actions of the subscribers will set off the rules in the Automation Campaign, either adding the subscriber to another list, or opting the subscriber out of the sent list.

 

NOTE: Your display may appear slightly different in version 10.13.0 and newer.  These display changes do not affect the functionality of the feature.
