You will find several terms related to bounces that may be unfamiliar or may mean something different outside the platform. The following is a list of terms for this platform.

The following table defines several terms and how they are related to the platform:
Term | Definition |
Abuse Complaint | A recipient or ISP generated response to a message indicating that the message is spam, junk, and/or unsolicited. |
Block Bounce | A server, domain, or ISP generated response to a message indicating that the sender of the message is not allowed to send to this recipient. |
Bounce Category | Group of Bounce Phrases with a similar meaning and/or result. |
Bounce Message | Email message sent to a WhatCounts bounce mailbox either as an automated mail system error or notification, or as a reply from a recipient. |
Bounce Phrase | A regular expression to match text within a bounced message. |
Bounce Type | High level classification for a bounce message. |
Hard Bounce | A server or domain generated permanent error. |
Manual Opt-Out | A recipient generated response to a message containing a removal request. |
Soft Bounce | A server or domain generated temporary error, or a recipient response to a received message. |
UCE/Spam Email | Unsolicited bulk email sent to the bounce mailbox and not in response to an actual campaign or mailing. |
Unknown Bounce | A message of unknown bounce type which can be forwarded to a specified Customer Service Address. |
