Each list includes options to send follow up messages for each contact generated opt-in and opt-out. Opt-ins include signing-up through a subscription form. Opt-outs include canceling a subscription by clicking an unsubscribe link in an email message or web site.
For each Confirmation or Courtesy email setting, you can set the From email address, custom template, and email format. You can also define landing pages for Subscription Forms and Opt-Out links created using the Subscription Form Wizard.
Confirmations
Double opt-in lists are one way to ensure CAN-SPAM compliance and prevent spam complaints and unwanted email. A positive confirmation is required before a subscription is created. This helps validate email addresses and contact intentions before the email is added to your list.
- Require confirmation for all list sign-ups: Select to require contacts to confirm their subscription.
- From address: The optional email address from which the message appears to be sent. You may specify a decorative From with the email address. The display portion must be in quotes and the email address enclosed in angle brackets. If no From Address is defined, the From Address for the List will be used.
- Template: An optional Template defined with the Confirmation Template Tags. if no Template is selected, and auto-generated plain-text message will be sent with the necessary confirmation link.
- Format: Content format to send the message. Plain text is recommended because your Contact preference will not yet be known.
Courtesy Messages
Subscribe / Opt-In
After a contact has signed up for your list, you can send a welcome courtesy message. This is an opportunity to communicate the intentions of your mailings and present up-sell opportunities.
- Send courtesy email for new list sign-ups: Select to send a welcome message after each new subscription.
- From address: The optional email address from which the message appears to be sent. You may specify a decorative From with the email address. NOTE: Courtesy messages are not tracked. You will not be able to see the message send, opens, clicks, or other tracking events related to a Courtesy message in reporting.
Unsubscribe / Opt-Out
When a contact cancels their subscription, you can send a good-bye courtesy message. This is an opportunity to remind the contact of what they will miss, provide an incentive to return and a method to subscribe at a later time.
- Send courtesy email after list cancellation or opt out: Select to send a courtesy message after each contact opt-out.
- From address: The optional email address from which the message appears to be sent. You may specify a decorative From with the email address. The display portion must be in quotes and the email address enclosed in angle brackets. If no From Address is defined, the From Address for the List will be used.

Default Marketing Automation Campaigns
An alternate to using a Courtesy Email on subscribe, you can define a Welcome Message as a Template and deploy this message using a Welcome Series Marketing Automation Campaign.
- Automatically add all new Contacts to this Marketing Automation Campaign: Select to deploy the selected Lifecycle Campaign to each contact generated subscription request.
When a new contact is added to a List, then the contact email will be added to the default Lifecycle Campaign. Contacts can be added to a Lifecycle Campaign in this manner through Import Contacts and choosing the "Use Automation Campaign defined in List" option, Batch Subscribe, Preference Site, API call, Subscribe Link or Subscription Form.
This feature was introduced in v10.0.0.
