Email Tagging for Customer Identification

All WhatCounts clients who have purchased the Browse Abandonment and/or Universal Cart Recovery automators have the ability to capture user-entered emails on their websites by utilizing the Behavioral Track & Trigger JavaScript code and customizing it to monitor specific fields / forms on the website.

In an effort to further improve our customer identification methods, WhatCounts users also have the ability to tag ESP-driven emails with a merge tag that is added to the email’s URL so that when a customer clicks through, we can track the customer for the purposes of triggering Browse Abandonment and Universal Cart Recovery campaigns. By default, all WhatCounts-driven emails contain an encrypted version of this tag.

This tagging should be added to any and all emails, such as newsletters or promotions, that are sent via your ESP. For the tagging to be included in emails created in your ESP, you will need to add them as part of setting up the email.

Adding these merge tags allows WhatCounts to cookie and identify more customers who go onto your website so that we can trigger more Browse and Cart Recovery emails. The more emails that include this tagging, the more customers WhatCounts will be able to identify.

Notes:

  • This tagging will need to be done for all links to your e-Commerce site in the email HTML code.
  • This tagging will need to be done for all UTM links in the HTML code for all ESPs in which you have to manually add the UTM.
  • If your eCommerce platform is setup to use HTTPS, then you need to select the “HTTPS” protocol when setting up the links. Similarly, if your eCommerce platform is HTTP, then you need to select the “HTTP” protocol.

Merge Tag Installation Instructions - Encrypted Email

The recommended tagging method leverages our WC_Encrypted_Email field, which populates an encrypted tag in link URLs, rather than a customer's plaintext email address.

Note: WhatCounts also supports plain-text-email-address URL tagging, which provides the benefit of tagging all contacts in your email lists, including the ones not present in the WhatCounts database. However, special handling is required to avoid passing PII (personally-identifying information) to in URLs to Google Analytics, which is a violation of Google's privacy policy. Instructions for this plain-text tagging method can be found at the bottom of this page.

Email tagging for customer identification via ESP-driven emails is available for the following ESPs:
